To review the rainbow order of colors, first graders recently created whimsical birds out of tempera paint. While there are technically seven colors in the rainbow, we focused on the visual arts color wheel which contains six main colors. Students started with the three primary colors and mixed to create the three secondary colors. With all six of these colors, students painted simple circles as the bases of their birds. The circles were then cut out and glued in rainbow order onto construction paper of their choice, and decorated to resemble small chicks.
The results are stunning and demonstrate the wonderful detail that the first grade students are able to achieve. Bravo!
