Focusing on artwork that relates to their own lives, students in second grade recently created self-portraits. Students looked at famous artists who used themselves as the subject matter for their paintings. Instead of doing a self-portrait of their current self, however, students were asked to draw themselves in their dream profession.

Students started by learning how to mix their skin tone with a variety of paint colors. Once completed, students learned about the proportions of the face, and added facial features. On a new piece of paper, students dressed themselves for their future job using construction paper, oil pastels, and markers. The backgrounds were done in a variety of materials from watercolors to chalk pastels.

The end result is a beautiful array of work that showcases the desires and dreams of our students.
